Class Tutorial – November 11th, 2011

“I don’t want expensive gifts; I don’t want to be bought. I have everything I want. I just want someone to be there for me, to make me feel safe and secure” by Princess Diana

Our tutorial today start at 10.15 am with readability metrics and ideal writing standard begins our discussion by Dr. Joanne.

Frankly speaking, during the previously weeks, I learn most of the topics but in term of explanations and discussion, I learn a lot of new thing which was share by Dr. Joanne to us in the class. And I have to say, that are new thing that I should learn and know about what is journalism is all about. Everything is new as it was journalism mean to all journalists. Every day we go to coverage and events, we learn something new. That is what I am trying to say about this week topics…framing on Sept 11. I didn’t know that the frame is based on cultural logic as the problematic effects-the cause-moral judgement and finally the Initial Remedy. Of cause, Sept 11 is one of top stories news in the world history, besides the Death of Princess Diana in 1998 and Michael Jackson in 2010.

But what I’m trying to say is I write news stories without framing it and sometime, I have to follow what my desk editor want accordance to the gatekeeper as government officials. But the thing is why we don’t frame the news stories before we write on it? If, I missed this class on that day, I miss everything because among all the topics were discussed previously, this week is the most obviously attracted to me…

Of course, every student of journalism must be familiar with such statement, “dog bites man is not news, man bites dog is; or that news is anything that makes the reader say ‘Gee Whiz’ (Bogart, quoted in Mott 1950: 376, 126; Harrison, 2006: p.21)

And Willmott Lewis on the audience’s; “I think it well to remember that, when writing for the newspapers, we are writing for an elderly lady in Hastings who has two cats of which she is passionately fond. Unless our staff can successfully compete for her interest with those cats, it is no good”, (quoted in sherrin 2003: 165)

Very interesting is Three different classes of objects; political events, issues and actors (politicians, individuals groups) – Sept 11 frame. For this topic, it is very useful for my thesis and I want to frame my thesis as what Dr. Joanne do, Sept 11 World Trade Centre/Twin Tower
